WEEKLY ANNOUNCEMENTS:

February 5, 2012

HOLY COMMUNION...

is celebrated this weekend in all services in the Church with individual cups. Here at St. John Lutheran Church, we believe, teach and confess that the bread and wine we eat and drink at Holy Communion is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus. Jesus is truly present in this meal giving us the benefits He won for us on the cross: forgiveness of sins, life and salvation. Holy Communion is also a meal that expresses unity in faith and belief among those who partake in it. Because of this, and because those who eat and drink unworthily do so to their great harm, we ask those of you with us who are guests and visitors to this church to please speak to one of the pastors or elders before communing. Thank you and may God bless you in worship today!

ALTAR FLOWERS

The altar flowers are given in honor of the 46th wedding anniversary of Howard and Mary Grime on February 5.

NANCY SCHATZ'S RETIREMENT PARTY

Nancy is retiring Friday, March 9. On Sunday, March 11, we will have an open house in the Fellowship Room to honor Nancy. The time of the event is 12:30 p.m.- 3:00 p.m. Please plan to attend. Also, we are gathering notes for Nancy to be included in a book for Nancy. Please email Rita at bergman-sjl@defnet.com or drop a typed or written note at the church office by Friday, Feb. 17.

“CARING MOMENTS”...

is a special service just for you today! Are you hurting in some way and want to speak to someone who would like to help and listen to your concerns and special prayer requests? Tell an usher that you want to speak to someone or look for a Stephen Minister who is wearing their nametag and is there to listen to you. We pray this ministry will be of help. From Your Stephen Ministry Team

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT ST. JOHN LUTHERAN SCHOOL?

Kindergarten through fourth grade students attended an assembly last week that addressed child safety issues, including bullying, dealing with strangers, drugs and avoiding danger when crossing a street. A mix of interactive discussion and magic tricks done by “Kerry Kazaam the Safety Man” held the students’ attention for the 45-minute presentation. Patrolman Chris Yocum of the Defiance Police Department arranged for this National Child Safety Program to be presented at St. John.

"Pull Yourself Together!"

Have you heard this before? Others may have said it to you or you may have said it to yourself. But things just aren't coming together. You're still hurting. You still feel like things are falling apart. Our Stephen Ministers are trained caregivers who will walk with you, listen to you, and provide confidential one-to-one care, as you search through the pieces and find what is truly in your heart. To find out more talk with a Stephen Leader: Pastor Luhring, Pastor Schmidt, Penny Mueller, Faith Smith, Rita Bergman, Sheryl Frederick, Dr. Jeff Pruitt and Sandy Joost. Call St. John at 419-782-5766 and ask to speak to a Stephen Leader.

DRUM SET NEEDED

A good used drum set is needed for the kids praise team for the Bridge worship service. If you have one to donate, call Zech Teasdale at 419-782-5766.

CLOTHES CLOSET

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY

Breaking Free: The Journey, The Stories by Beth Moore is the women’s Bible study for Sisters in Christ: A Women Supporting Women Bible Study. In this DVD series, Beth leads women to discover the transforming power of freedom in Jesus Christ and to identify personal obstacles in their lives. Our group meets on the second Monday evening of each month from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Our next meeting is Monday, February 13th, and we invite you to come for this very interesting study. Please join us in Penny Mueller’s home at 3117 Sandlewood Drive. At 6:00 we share a meal of pizza and salad provided each time. If you prefer, you may come at 7:00 for the Bible study only. We would love to see new faces. Feel free to call Penny Mueller (419-784-3299) or Judy Detter (419-393-2054) for more information.

LADIES AID

The Ladies Aid was formed many years ago by the ladies of the church to minister to the people of St. John Lutheran Church and School. Their aim was to serve God and minister to the church members in any way if there was a need. The Ladies have earned money through bazaars, quilting, sauerkraut suppers and other methods so that they could help the church and school purchase an oven, books, etc. and other things that were needed. The Ladies Aid recently gave $500 to the Social Welfare and Food Pantry of the church. This was a ministry to people in need, as God commanded in the Bible. The group of ladies today is a small but active group, especially when they prepare and serve funeral meals. This is a ministry to the family and friends of the deceased. When ladies of the church are asked to bring a "dish" for the funeral meal, they never refuse. They willingly bring foods to aid in this ministry. Members or not, they are glad to be a part of helping other Christians. I want to thank all the people who serve on the funeral meals committee and those who bring foods, to answering God’s call to help those people who need some special caring. We cannot do this without the help of all people involved. Our thanks to all of you that help in the Ladies Aid and those who help the Ladies Aid in ministering to all people. May God bless you richly for your support in meeting our goals in ministry.

CHURCH PEWS FOR SALE

The Trustees have pews for sale. The previous pews are 15 feet long and we are asking $100.00 each. There is a limited amount of pews, so call the church office as soon as possible at 419-782-5766.

TONER AND INKJET CARTRIDGES

Once a month we recycle toner and inkjet cartridges at Office Max, Office Depot, Staples and Quill for a total of $120 a month or 50 cartridges recycled each month. The recycling of cartridges helps defray the cost of church and school office supplies. The recycle bin is located at the reception desk by the south entrance doors. Also, with every $500.00 spent at Office Max, we receive $25.00 in Max Perks monies to be used on supplies. So, if you want to add your purchase to the church account, just give them our phone number, 419-782-5766, or mention St. John Lutheran Church.
