Cookie Walk...Needs Your Help

Our Cookie walk for the youth is coming up really soon. But we need the help from as many people that we can get. First and most important, we need the help of people to donate cookies or any special Christmas snack or treat for this event.

Last year was a huge success for our Youth Ministries and we hope that we can have a huge selection for all people. The way I see it is that we all benefit from this because the second part is that we want you to come stop by the Cookie walk which will be taking place before and after the Christmas dinner in the gymnasium, on December 7th.

So start baking and let us know that you are willing to donate. There will and has been an insert in the bulletin for the proper information to fill out for this event. If you have any further questions you can contact Dave in the church office, or Nancy Kemper in the school office.

Sunday Night Youth Nights

Sunday nights have changed a little from last year. I know that last year we switched every Sunday for one night being for Senior High and the other weekends blended.

BUT this year we are inviting all kids on Sundays from 6-8:00p.m. These nights are fun nights for kids to come hang out and usually play some sort of fun game together with other Youth Group kids grades 6th through 12th.

Also, important to note is that when we have a weekend event there will not be a Youth Night on Sunday. We really wan to encourage our kids on Wednesday nights to really come and be apart of this group because it is a fun time for the kids to enjoy the Youth Room and enjoy each others company. The next Youth Night will be Nov., 30th then Dec. 14th and 21st.

Angel Tree Delivery Youth Night Special Event

December 20th and 21st we will be delivering the Angel Tree gifts that we receive every year. But this year we will be doing something different for our Youth and kids, on the 21st, a Sunday Night, we will be having a special Christmas Party with a guest speaker to come and speak to come and speak on something important in our area.

This will be family event as we hope that families will come and participate with this awesome ministry that is the Angel Tree program. This Sunday event will be a really neat event for parents and kids to enjoy on the 21st, so please mark your calendars and come and find the true joy of the Christmas season.

2010 National LCMS Youth Gathering
New Orleans, Louisiana
July 17 - 21, 2010

Alright are you ready for another National Youth Gathering? For those of you who have never heard of such a thing, I must tell you it is a trip of a lifetime. Our Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod every three years has what we call "The National Youth Gathering" or as know by those who have been there just simply "The Gathering".

For the last seven Gatherings we have sent a group of Senior High kids from Defiance, Ohio to the Gatherings. It is a time for Senior High kids to meet thousands (yes thousands!!) of new people from all around the country.

The last Gathering was held in Orlando, FL and was an awesome time not only for this guy but also for the kids. In 2010 the Gathering will be help in New Orleans, LA and has the potential to be the best one yet. Our goal at St. John is not only to have a group of kids going but really excited about the awesome opportunity that is before them. If you are currently in 7th-10th grade you are eligible to go for the 2010 trip.

The Gatherings are filled with awesome things to do, like playing four square, basketball, or making Dave dolls (Talk to a couple of kids from last year's group about this) But there is so many things going on with special speakers, Bible Study, and even laser tag or Nerf gun wars. You will not be bored at all.

If you are interested in coming to the Gathering we have some mandatory meetings for the kids and parents. The first meeting will be June 12th starting at 7:00pm and lasting an hour. There is another meeting June 22nd from 5:30-6:00p.m. We really hope to see you there and if there are any other questions contact Dave McGinley.

Youth nights in the summer!

daveeggFor about the last year we have been having Youth Nights every Sunday (6-8pm), and this will still continue throughout the summer. When thinking of Youth Nights I wanted to highlight my favorite so far...(although they go in no particular order).

But for sure number one was the night we played "The Game of the Year". Man was that disgusting watching some take egg in the face, but it was priceless.

Another favorite was Ultimate Frisbee night and watching some of our youth turn into beasts on the field. Finally, I would point out the night I was introduced to Omni Ball and all its greatness. So please come join us all through the summer, 6th grade through 12th for a fun time and fellowship. And who knows Gretchen might make homemade cookies.

Sr. High Bible Study at Dave's

If you were confirmed this last year, then yes, you are welcome to come too. I would personally like to invite you all (those that are in Sr. High) to a Bible Study at my apartment (406 1/2 Williams St.). The study starts at 6:30p.m. and goes to 8:30p.m.

Bible study is such an important thing for you as a Christian. God wants all of us to have a personal relationship with Him and we are so blessed that he desires that with us. But the flip side of that is that no one person is called to be a Christian by themselves. Fellowship and support from other people is crucial for your growth in Christ.

So come and check it out, trust me it is a ton of fun. We recently just finished watching, "The Golden Compass". Maybe you heard how that movie caused quite an uproar within the Christian community. In the study we talked about why it upset so many people in our church and how can we learn from this movie and what the writer is really trying to say about Christianity.

Again, this is a study that everyone is invited to and Dave and Gretchen will be the primary leaders. We would love to see you there and if anything come and eat some of the food that we have prepared for you guys and girls.
